What does an amniocentesis test for?

 What does amniocentesis mean and why does it conducted???

-->The process of obtaining amniotic fluid from the amniotic sac(womb) of a pregnant woman for the detection of prenatal diseases is known as amniocentesis. 

It is done to know  if the fetus is suffered from any diseases.
